Did Paul teach against AD70? Part 5.

Rebuttal towards “Paul refutes Preterism Part 5.

“6. Paul told of a future falling away consisting of two chief Catholic doctrines (I Tim 4:1-6),

celibacy and fasting from meats, involving satanic deception just as with the man of sin,

which did not originate until several centuries after 70 A.D.

7. Paul also prophesied of a falling away from sound doctrine involving great immorality,

ritualism, silly women, much deception, and fables (II Tim 3:1 – 4:4).

8. Paul wrote these two epistles around 58-65 A.D., but these apostasies were still future.

9. Peter warned of false teachers arising within the church and seducing many (II Pet 2:1-2).

10. John admitted many little antichrists, but the big one had not yet come (I John 2:18-19).

11. Daniel had identified a falling away with the little horn of Rome, or Catholic papacy, for

it would blasphemously and arrogantly think to change times and laws (Dan 7:25).

12. The widespread defection from the apostles occurred after Paul by several centuries, as

countless Roman Catholic alterations and inventions deceived a large majority.

13. The RCC apostasy stands alone in extent, duration, blasphemy, delusion, popularity, etc.

14. Preterism has been krefuted here by the falling away being several centuries after 70 A.D”

*****************************

We have rebutted point F in general in our earlier article. For this part I will answer the points stated here by point.

6. Paul told of a future falling away consisting of two chief Catholic doctrines (I Tim 4:1-6),

celibacy and fasting from meats, involving satanic deception just as with the man of sin,

which did not originate until several centuries after 70 A.D.

This is not true. The passage here is not about the Roman Catholicism.

1 Timothy 4:3

who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

It is actually about what he had said in Chapter 1 of 1 Timothy.

1 Timothy 1:6-8

Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.

Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully,

It is about people who were teaching the old covenant practices to the believers. This include the for forbidding of marriage and abstinence from food.

Further it was something that was happening even at that time as Colossians tells us.

Colossians 2:16-17

Freedom From Human Rules

Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

What is this shadow?

Hebrews 10:1

The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves.

7. Paul also prophesied of a falling away from sound doctrine involving great immorality,

ritualism, silly women, much deception, and fables (II Tim 3:1 – 4:4).

Let’s actually read these verses.

2 Timothy 3:1 – 4:3

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the LAST days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a FORM of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.

Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they WILL NOT GET very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.

YOU, (Timothy)however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured.

Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

But AS FOR YOU (Timothy) continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give YOU this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage —with great patience and careful instruction.

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

Notice the whole passage to directed to Timothy about what would happen in the last days.

But note what Paul says these people will not get very far. This simply points to the fact that these men existed at Timothy’s time.

8. Paul wrote these two epistles around 58-65 A.D., but these apostasies were still future.

That’s debunked. In the previous articles I have clearly shown that the events spoken in 2 Thessalonians 2 has already happened.

9. Peter warned of false teachers arising within the church and seducing many (II Pet 2:1-2).

2 Peter 2:1-2

But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them —bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.

This is talking about people who are trying to bring believers back to the Law.

2 Peter 2:20

If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.

It’s not speaking about false prophets today.

10. John admitted many little antichrists, but the big one had not yet come (I John 2:18-19).

This point is going to be detailed.

About the “Anti-Christ”.

Please note the word “antichrist” was only used by John in 1 and 2 John and no where else.

1 John 2:18

Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.

1 John 2:22

Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son.

1 John 4:2-3

This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

2 John 1:7

I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.

Putting the verses together you would realize the antichrist is denying Jesus had a human body.

Few realized context is everything. John was in Ephesus at the time of writing. The challenge there was the teaching of Cerinthus. He stated teaching people Jesus was spirit and not human. Hence denying Jesus came in the flesh.

He says all spirit is good. All flesh is evil. The problem with that is that God made Jesus is likeness of sinful flesh so that your sins are placed on that body and condemned.

Romans 8:3-4

For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

If what Cerinthus says is true, your sins were not condemned and still in you. That’s why 1 John starts off, with “touching seeing and hearing”.

John says that to prove he saw, touched and heard Jesus, not only as Spirit but also as a human being with a body.

1 John 1:1-3

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.

The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.

We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

That was also what he said in his gospel.

John 1:14

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

In Cerinthus’ interpretation, the Christ came to Jesus at baptism, guided him in his ministry, but left him at the crucifixion.

Early Christian tradition describes Cerinthus as a contemporary to and opponent of John the Evangelist, who may have written the First Epistle of John and the Second Epistle of John to warn the less mature in faith and doctrine about the changes he was making to the original gospel.

Let me just share with you an account of how John saw this man as the personification of the antichrist.

According to Irenaeus, Polycarp told the story that John the Apostle, in particular, is said to have so detested Cerinthus that he once fled a bathhouse when he found out Cerinthus was inside, yelling “Let us flee, lest the building fall down; for Cerinthus, the enemy of the truth, is inside!”

One tradition maintains that John wrote his first two epistles to counter Cerinthus’ heresy.

Therefore. Please note the antichrist is not the beast. He has nothing to do with 666 who is Nero. They are 2 different characters. The beast is described as one who sits on 7 hills which is clearly Rome.

Anyone who says that we should associate the 2 clearly has not taken the trouble to study scriptures understanding that motive of the letters of John.

11. Daniel had identified a falling away with the little horn of Rome, or Catholic papacy, for

it would blasphemously and arrogantly think to change times and laws (Dan 7:25).

Daniel 7:25

He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time.

A time, times and half a time is 3 and 1/2 years. That’s the length of the Jewish war. It is the past. The times and Law which were supposedly attempted to be changed were the Jewish calendar and practices. Not the current times.

As for points 12-14 which the author alludes the antichrist to the Roman Catholic Church, it’s pure conjecture.
