There are so many Christians who keep saying to others that the Holy Spirit told them this and that.
Then when you point out that what they have said is out of context, they accuse you of having a carnal mind.
What is a “carnal mind”?
For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
Let’s look at this from the NIV.
The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.
Now do you know what is the next verse?
You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.
Yes. You as in the Roman Christians who lived 2000 years ago.
If these people already do not possess the carnal mind 2000 years ago, how it is it still exists today?
That’s the 1st point.
Let’s read a bit more.
Paul says this.
Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
This is how it reads in KJV.
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Now let’s read the verse before this.
For what the LAW was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the LAW might be FULLY met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Let me show you the KJV.
For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
So what is the “carnal mind”?
It is living under the old covenant and trying your best to keep the commandments to be perfect.
That’s why Paul said Jesus died to fully fulfil the requirements of the Law to set you free from it so that you can live according to the Spirit.
The carnal mind is the pre-cross mind. It doesn’t exist anymore but perhaps only in those who have to make themselves perfect when they do not know that Christ is already their perfection.
