So often when we read this verse we are consumed with idea that we think demons will be able to possess a weak Christian or a former demon possessed man.
“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”
The key word here is this: “That is how it will be with THIS WICKED GENERATION”.
I want us to appreciate what Jesus is actually saying by looking at the audience he was referring to.
Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
Notice Jesus was answering the Jews. He was actually telling people how it is to go into and grace and the return to the Law.
Peter also said the same thing here.
2 Peter 2:20-22
If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”
Both these passages are talking about people who left the Law but because of the persecution of the Jews fall back into the Law.
Jesus said people like that are like people who have been cleansed and then be filled with more spirits. They become the worst people in the world.
But it was for on THAT GENERATION, that 40 years where the Law was fading away and Grace was becoming the established predominant covenant.
The Law was destroyed in AD70 to prevent this from happening.
It’s not about demons. It’s about a teaching referred by Paul as teaching of demons.
The return to the Law.
