David & Goliath: The Sword that beheaded Goliath.
Here is a great blog from a good friend Richard Yap. The is part 2 of his former blog.
Part 2 of 5 by Richard Yap
In Part 1, we saw that David’s weapon of choice was the sling – he didn’t have a sword. So after killing him with a sling stone, David used Goliath’s own sword to behead the giant: 1 Samuel 17:51 David ran over and pulled out Goliath’s sword. Then he used it to cut off Goliath’s head.
This is a picture of what Jesus did to destroy the devil. David is a type of Jesus while Goliath represents the devil and sin. The wages of sin is death (Rom 6:23) and thus death is the weapon of sin. In 1 Cor 15:56 we are told “the strength of sin is the law”. Adam sinned by choosing the law as represented by the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. When Adam sinned, his dominion in the earth was lost to the devil and death began to reign over humanity and in the earth. The devil was given power over death and thus death also became the devil’s weapon.
David was Israel’s champion and representative who took up Goliath’s one-on-one “winner takes all” challenge. Jesus became a man so he could become humanity’s representative to regain man’s dominion that Adam lost to the devil. Heb 2:14 We are people of flesh and blood. That is why Jesus became one of us. He died to destroy the devil, who had power over death (CEV). You see that? Jesus died to destroy the devil! He used the devil’s very own weapon of death to take away the devil’s power over death.
Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel (NIV). As David used Goliath’s sword to cut off Goliath’s head, Jesus used the devil’s sword of death to crush the devil’s head. As David saved all Israel from physical death at the hand of Goliath, so Jesus saved all humanity from spiritual death at the hand of the devil.
Romans 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life (NKJV). Just as humanity was naturally born in sin because of Adam’s sin, so humanity was supernaturally reborn in the Spirit because of Jesus’ obedience. Humanity has been “born again” as a new creation after the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Romans 5:21…as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (NKJV). Friends, death no longer has power over you. You have been born again in the Spirit because of Jesus. Your lost dominion in this earth has been regained. You are now alive and well and can reign in this life as kings through the last Adam, Jesus Christ.
