Fasting, praying and demons.

Yesterday someone asked me how come I don’t fast before I healed the lady. I said it was old covenant teaching that tells you have to fast and pray before miracles can happen.

She replied “but all the main churches teaches that. Are you saying that they are wrong and only you are right?”

I just smiled. So I thought it would be good to comment on this.

What about fasting and praying? What did Jesus mean when he said “these kind of demons can only be exercised when you fast and pray?”

This is the story and the verses.

Mark 9:17-18

A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”

Then Jesus said this.

Mark 9:28-29

After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.”

Now ask yourself a question.

How did Jesus do it? Did he fast and pray?

Mark 9:25-26

When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”

The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.”

Where is the “prayer and fasting”?

Let’s look at the context.

Mark 9:14-15

When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them.

They were arguing with the teachers of the Law. So their mindset was still very law base. They were trying to cast the spirit out by the old covenant way.

  • Today Jesus lives in us. Do you see the apostles pray and fast after the coming of the Holy and Especially after Acts 15 when they realised the Law was over at the council in Jerusalem? They don’t even fast after that!  The only fasting Paul spoke about was when he fasted when he did not have food in his journeys. Not because he fast but he had nothing to eat!

I hope this video clarifies a crazy myth we believe in. Oh I forgot. You don’t fast because you are NOT a Jew!
