What were the “principalities and powers” Jesus disarmed?

How did Jesus disarm the principalities and powers on the cross?
Colossians 2:15

And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
How did Jesus do it? Was there a demonstration of outcasting of demons on the cross? Why the cross? Does it not seem to be a defeat?
Notice it doesn’t say the resurrection but the cross. The public spectacle was done at the same time of the cross.
Dear friend, this is how it was done.
Matthew 27:50-51
And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
He rendered the temple, the Law and the old covenant absolutely useless. That’s how he demonstrated publicly the disarmament of the principalities and powers.
They are not referring to demons and devils. Paul was referring to the power of the Law.
Galatians 4:9

But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?
That’s why I tell you, the War is over!

  1. Isaiah 61 says:

I have been following your post for a little while and I enjoy your webcasts. I would like to ask a question about Ephesians 6:12. Flesh and blood would be mankind , but the evil rulers and authorities of the “unseen” world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against “evil spirits” in the heavenly places.

I Believe this to be referring to Demons , not only through text but through living out deliverance of many demons in my day to day walk with the father. I have now done several now and they are very much alive and very much on the war path. Do you believe Demons are here with us on earth?

    1. Simon Yap says:

I am done quite a fair bit of deliverances. I have often why most of the people I deliver are Christians?

As to your enquiry, please consider what Paul says about spiritual forces.

      Colossians 2:20-21

Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”?

Paul was talking about the Law of Moses.
