30: God’s payment.

Did you know that the price of a wounded slave is 30 pieces of silver?

Did you know that in Zechariah God told Israel that they can buy God out from His covenant for 30 pieces of silver.

Zechariah 11:10-12
And I took my staff Favor, and I broke it, annulling the covenant that I had made with all the peoples.

So it was annulled on that day, and the sheep traders, who were watching me, knew that it was the word of the Lord.

Then I said to them, “If it seems good to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.” And they weighed out as my wages thirty pieces of silver.

That was how much they valued God’s workmanship.

The interesting thing was Judas was paid 30 pieces of silver for handing Jesus to the chief priest.
What we have been always taught is that Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.

What we overlooked is this. It was the chief priest who paid him this money.

Matthew 26:14-15
Judas to Betray Jesus

Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests
and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver.

The high priest of Israel is the representative of the people of Israel. He is the highest of the chief priest. Yet it is the priests the representative of all Israel who are the people who betrayed Jesus.

They bought God out of his covenant with the price of a wounded slave 30 pieces of silver.

It is the same chief priests who then announced in front of a wounded Jesus “we have no King except Caesar” and later “let his blood be upon us and our generation”. One generation. 40 years.

So it was that generation who bought God and treated him as a wounded slave.

It is sad that he would purchase us with his blood which is more precious than gold and silver was sold for the price of a wounded slave.

No wonder Jesus called them a depraved generation. No wonder the wrath of God was poured on that generation.

Those who believe in that generation were saved.
It was a generation that has come and gone.

It is not our generation. We didn’t pay 30 pieces of silver for him. We belong to a covenant which Jesus as a man paid God.

He paid a very handsome price to keep us in His covenant.
1 Peter 1:18-19
knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold,

but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

Nothing in all creation is more precious than that. Not all the precious metals put together.

That’s why this new covenant is unlike the old. There is nothing that can buy us out from the covenant Jesus established for us in His Father.

May you find rest in that.
