So often we tell people that Christ is coming back soon as such now is the day of salvation?
Let’s look at this.
2 Corinthians 6:2
For he says,
“In a favorable time I listened to you,
and in a day of salvation I have helped you.”
Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
This is what Paul said in 2 Corinthians. However let’s look at the sources of his quote.
The Restoration of Israel
Thus says the Lord:
“In a time of favor I have answered you;
in a day of salvation I have helped you;
I will keep you and give you
as a covenant to the people,
to establish the land,
to apportion the desolate heritages,
This verse applies to the Hebrews. It speaks about the restoration of the covenant of Abraham to the Jews. This covenant was restored through the cross of Jesus when the Law began to fade away on the cross and finally faded away when the Temple and Jerusalem was destroyed.
This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void.
So the day of salvation is not now in the 21st century. It was then. The period of grace from the cross to AD70. That was the NOW then.
We are not in the day of salvation. We are saved before that day.
Let’s look at this verse.
Romans 13:12 The night [this present evil age] is almost gone and the day [of Christ’s return] is almost here. So let us fling away the works of darkness and put on the [full] armor of light.
At the time of writing which is around AD67, Paul already says the night is almost gone and Jesus was almost there. Now let’s look at the verse in context.
11 Do this, knowing that this is a critical time. It is already the hour for you to awaken from your sleep [of spiritual complacency]; for our salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed [in Christ]. 12 The night [this present evil age] is almost gone and the day [of Christ’s return] is almost here. So let us fling away the works of darkness and put on the [full] armor of light.
In fact Paul says it is almost at hand in his time.
1 Corinthians 10:11 American Standard Version (ASV)
11 Now these things happened unto them by way of example; and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.
So you can see the crucial time was then. Not NOW. But THEN. From AD30 to AD70.
Stop telling people how they need to be saved. Rather tell them how saved they are and let them respond accordingly.
