A Living Sacrifice
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
A lot of us have misunderstood these verses and taught us that we must alienate ourselves from the world.
Now why would Paul do that. He just spent 11 chapters to tell you works does not bring you any closer to God or your salvation.
The answer is simple. The word “world” in the passage is not “world”. It is “age”. You will see this in the Amplified Bible.
So Paul is saying “do not be conform to the patterns of this AGE.” The age he was speaking about was what was he was speaking about in Romans 1-11.
The age of the Law.
What Paul is saying that under the Law the sacrifices are offered in the Temple is Jerusalem because God stays there.
Now at the time of the writing of that passage God was building a new temple with us as the living stones. He was building us onto Jesus as our cornerstone.
Hence God was making us His new Temple. This is how we are to renew our minds. The sacrifices ended. We become the new Temple. We become His host. That’s how we worship now.
- We are now the royal priesthood.
It is by becoming this house and this priesthood we become the living sacrifice. We worship by being His temple.
