Carrying your cross daily?

Luke 9:23-27
Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.

For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?

For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”

Have you ever read this passage of scripture before and ask yourself “how can I carry the cross on a daily basis?”

I want us to note the word “daily” does not mean on a “daily basis” but rather “for a certain age” or “for a certain time”. To be specific it refers to the time between the “transition between night and day”.

In other words it refers specifically to the transition between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant.

Also note that it is until the period of a specific judgement.

If you note carefully and read the Olivet discourse in Matthew 24, the day of Judgement was in AD70. On of the disciples who survived that was John.

Dear friends, you don’t carry the cross anymore. You have been crucified with Christ already. The cross is a thing for an age that has long gone.

You died with him on the day he was crucified. You were buried with him on the day he was buried. You now are seated with him already in resurrection.

  1. “Take up your cross” is old covenant. In the new covenant we have been “raised with Christ”. We are now Joint Heirs with the resurrected Christ. Therefore, all that Jesus has, we have.

The “red letter” movement is dangerous. (Positing that we should adhere to all the words of Jesus ‘to the letter’). Because it puts people back into the old covnenant. As Paul said to the Galatians, this is “foolish”.

All comments MUST pass through the cross. The cross is the key. The new covenant epistles do not speak of “taking up our cross”. In fact, the “I die daily” verse by Paul referred to being under threat of wild beasts in his travels. It had nothing to do with “taking up your cross”.

The “taking up your cross” mob are by people who are sin conscious. They interpret scritpure through Old Covenant eyes. They do not understand “the old has gone, the new has come”.

    “But we see Jesus”…

    Peter
