Breaking the myth of unequaled anointing: Elijah and Elisha.

What transpired when Elisha received a double portion of Elijah’s spirit?

Many teach this as if certain believers are more powerful or anointed than the rest. This is misconceived.

2 Kings 2:9-12
9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?”

“Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied.
10 “You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours–otherwise not.”
11 As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. 12 Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!” And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them apart.

Its about being the principal successor. In Jewish succession law, if you have 2 sons, the elder son gets 2/3 and the younger son gets 1/3 of the father’s possession. If he has 3 sons, then the older son gets 2/4 of the father’s possession and the rest of the children gets 1/4 each.

The elder son has a double portion of the inheritance.

Its about the right of the first born. The “double portion” here refers to Elijah’s recognition of Elisha as his successor and treating him like a first born son.

Remember God had told Elijah that there were still 500 prophets that have yet to bow down to Jezebel and Ahab, so choosing a successor was not an easy thing.  What I want you to see here is this, many people use this to teach, certain people are more anointed than the rest and as such, we should submit to them.

Look at what Elisha said immeadiately after Elijah was taken away.

“My father! My father!”  This concept of successor is common among the Hebrews. Paul called Timothy his son. Timothy is not his natural son but he was discipled schooled and train to take over his place.

Let me share with you what John says in 1 John 2:

20 But you HAVE an ANOINTING from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.[e] 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth. 22 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ.

Such a person is the antichrist – denying the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

24 As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is what he promised us – eternal life.

26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. 27 As for you, the ANOINTING you received from him REMAINS in you, and you DO NOT need anyone to teach you. But as his ANOINTING teaches you about ALL things and as that anointing is REAL, not counterfeit – just as it has taught you, remain in him.

There are four things here you will learn about anointing.

1. You already have it. see verse 20. YOU HAVE AN ANOINTING.
2. It does not go away from you. see verse 26. IT REMAINS IN YOU.
3. It makes you independent of people. see verse 27, YOU DO NOT NEED ANYONE TO TEACH YOU, IT WILL TEACH YOU ALLLLLL THINGS.
4. If it teaches and ask you to submit to people who will control you and manipulate you, IT IS NOT REAL!

Colossians 2:8-10 New International Version – UK (NIVUK)

8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces[a] of this world rather than on Christ.

9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness.

YOU HAVE BEEN BROUGHT TO THE FULLNESS!

The reason certain people seem to have a “bit more” is because we have been teaching this wrongly. However, when they are taught properly, they will see that it is already in them.
