12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind.
Today many of us are caught up with the blood moon prophecies and speculate the return of Jesus in 2015.
I want to see this and in its context.
31 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.
You would note that Joel wrote this. Let’s look at a few verses before it.
Like dawn spreading across the mountains
a large and mighty army comes,
such as never was of old
nor ever will be in ages to come.
3 Before them fire devours,
behind them a flame blazes.
Before them the land is like the garden of Eden,
behind them, a desert waste–
nothing escapes them.
4 They have the appearance of horses;
they gallop along like cavalry.
5 With a noise like that of chariots
they leap over the mountaintops,
like a crackling fire consuming stubble,
like a mighty army drawn up for battle.
6 At the sight of them, nations are in anguish;
every face turns pale.
7 They charge like warriors;
they scale walls like soldiers.
They all march in line,
not swerving from their course.
8 They do not jostle each other;
each marches straight ahead.
They plunge through defenses
without breaking ranks.
9 They rush upon the city;
they run along the wall.
They climb into the houses;
like thieves they enter through the windows.
10 Before them the earth shakes,
the heavens tremble,
the sun and moon are darkened,
and the stars no longer shine.
Before them the earth shakes. The heavens tremble, the sun and moon darkened and the stars no longer shine.
Note that this is an expression of the greatness of the Roman army who laid siege in Jerusalem in AD70.
It does not mean the moon will turn red and it does not refer to a future event. The breaking of the 6th seal speaks about the invasion of Rome to Jerusalem.
It is also when the angels left the temple. That’s how the heavens were shaken.
This is also not the first time the sun and moon is taken to mean something else.
Joseph said the sun and moon bowed down to him.
9 Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. ‘Listen,’ he said, ‘I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.’
Joseph was talking about Jacob, his mother and his brothers.
Hence note the sun, moon and the stars mean Israel and it’s tribes.
That’s the destruction of Jerusalem. That’s how the sun turns dark, the moon turns red and the stars fell. Israel was wiped out from the earth. In AD70. It was the end of the world. For the Jews not the Gentiles.
