The thief in the night has already come.

2 Peter 3:10
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.

The heavens being made bare does not mean something that will happen in the future. It happened 40 years after the cross. AD 70.

When Jesus died God nailed the Law to the cross and ended the administration of the Law by stripping the dominion of the angels over men.

Colossians 2:14-15
14 having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

The book of Hebrews said this.

Hebrews 12:18-24
18 You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm; 19 to a trumpet blast or to such a voice speaking words that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them, 20 because they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned.” 21 The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, “I am trembling with fear.”

22 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23 to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, 24 to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

That is how the heavens were shaken. When the Temple was destroyed, the Law came to a full end. That was how “heaven and earth passed away”.

The angels no longer dwell on Sinai. They moved to Zion. That’s how the heavens were laid bare.

Happy Easter. Enjoy the new heaven and new earth.
