Heaven and Earth has passed away.

Matthew 9:

9 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. 2 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.”

3 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”

4 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts?5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 Then the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God,who had given such authority to man.

When the scribes challenged Jesus about his ability to forgive sins by saying only God can forgive sins, they were actually saying they had the monopoly to do so. This is because forgiveness of sins was only available to the Jews from the temple. Since they are scribes, they knew the Law and how the whole process of bringing a lamb or bull was to be carried out.

As such to the teachers of the Law, forgiveness for only attainable in the temple. That is what the Jews meant by “heaven”. The temple was “heaven” on earth where God dwelt.
When Jesus said “the Son of Man has power to forgive sins, ON EARTH”, he meant that God does not live in that temple any more and He was in Jesus. Jesus said “destroy this temple and I will build it in 3 days”.

When Jesus said “he had power to forgive sins on earth” he meant he has power to forgive sins in Israel. That is what he meant by “on earth”. When the temple was destroyed in AD 70, Israel also seized to be a nation. As such “heaven and earth passed away”.

When that happened, righteousness through the law was replaced by righteousness by faith in Jesus Christ.

Matthew 5: 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

Jesus said these words thereafter:

Matthew 24: 34 Truly I say to you, this [x]generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

The things he said regarding what will happen in the generation then was:

15 “Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), 16 then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. 17 [h]Whoever is on the housetop must not go down to get the things out that are in his house. 18 [i]Whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 But pray that your flight will not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath. 21 For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. 22 Unless those days had been cut short, no [j]life would have been saved; but for the sake of the [k]elect those days will be cut short.

The abomination of the desolation came in the form a man by the name of Nero, who offered a pig in the temple and persecuted the Jews.Josephus writes about Christians escaping and fleeing to the mountains.

It was the end of the Law and the practice thereof.

Thus:

Ephesians 2:14-15
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
14 For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the [a]barrier of the dividing wall, 15 [b]by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might [c]make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace.

Dear friends, that is how Jesus became the end of the Law. Now we live in a new heaven and new earth. The heaven is us, the new temple of God, the earth is the Kingdom of God on this earth, while we await his glorious return to transform us and bring us back to his Father’s house.

  1. Up until this time, your posts have been right on target. Unfortunately today’s post is completely off base. Your claim that the old heaven (universe) and old earth has passed away and that we are living in a new heaven (universe) and earth age is incorrect. You have misinterpreted the Scriptures.

What has passed away is the age of the law. It was buried and left in the tomb when Jesus was resurrected on third day. With the resurrection, the gift of the Holy Spirit, and the ascension of Jesus Christ the new age of Grace the began which replaced the law. Unfortunately too many people are led by ministers who believe the law is necessary which is only led to great confusion resulting in many different denominations. Legalism of the Scribes and Pharisees still alive and well today. There are too many teachers of the law that are leading people in the wrong direction. You have made this perfectly clear in your posts and I applaud you for being on target in revealing the truths of the Scriptures.

There has been no change to the current heaven (universe) and earth since the fall other we now live in the age of grace. The Holy Spirit is always present and the Holy Trinity dwells in every believer! The universe has not changed since the fall, nor has the earth. This is still Satan’s domain and will continue to remain his domain until the final battle which is spoken in the New Testament in the writings of Paul and John. Sin and evil still exist along with physical death, disease, and the list goes on.

The new heaven and earth which will replace the current heaven earth will be totally different because all evil including Satan, death, disease, etc will be banished into hell and bound there forever. The new creation will be better than this creation was before the fall of Adam. It will be like nothing we could ever imagine not wildest dreams!

You have misinterpreted the apocalyptic writings of John and Paul. I suggest you go back to scriptures and “study to show yourself as an approved workman who has no reason to be ashamed, rightly discerning the Word of Truth which you have done prior to this post.

Ask the Lord to allow the Holy Spirit to lead you into the truth and understanding of the apocalyptic writings. You’re not the first person to misinterpret these passages. In all honesty you should follow the recommendation of my New Testament seminary professor who continually stated that the keys to interpret these apocalyptic writings has been lost since the first century. And perhaps the reason the keys have been lost was so that we believers would learn to walk by faith and learn to follow the directions of the Holy Spirit rather than a written document which would have only caused greater debate, confusion and schisms than the apocalyptic scriptures have created over the centuries.

I continue to pray for God’s blessings upon you as you write and follow the Holy Spirit’s leadership in interpreting scripture. God’s peace be with you fellow follower of Jesus Christ.

    • Dave, read my note again, I am saying the same thing you are saying. I am not saying that the heavenly heavens have changed. I am saying the Jews’ understanding of heaven to mean the temple and earth to mean earth. So the term “heaven and earth passing away” to mean the end of the administration of grace. Now however, we must recognise the new house of God is the body of Christ and that God lives is in us.

Does that mean the tribulation or the events in Revelations has taken place, the answer is yes and no. However, has the future events taken place, the answer is clearly no. Has the millennium taken place? No.

Is there a “new heaven and new earth” now, well yes. Its the age of grace and the age of the Gentiles. Are we in the age when Jesus rules his Kingdom and Israel restored? No.

I hope that clarifies everything. Thanks.

  2. Thank you for posting this brother! This definitely gives me something to chew on for a while. It seems that the Holy Spirit is highlighting the fact that many of the “end time” scriptures were fulfilled in 70 AD when Jerusalem was destroyed. I don’t think that all of the scriptures have been fulfilled but we have had 2000 years since Christ in which much has happened.

I find it interesting that Jesus made a reference between the Old Testament temple and His body. I think this was because He, at that time, was fulfilling the law. But when they destroyed that temple, in three days He was raised as the High Priest who only ministers New Covenant grace. We are part of that temple on Earth.

So even though all is not accomplished in the grand scheme, there is newness in heaven: the HIgh Priest who stands as our Representative. And there is newness in Earth: His born again children, the living Temple of God administering His kingdom.
