He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
Jacob’s encounter at Bethel changed his life. It was there God promised him “I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
Jacob responded by saying, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”
He called that place Bethel, which mean “House of God” and made a vow, saying, “of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.”
Many attribute Jacob’ success to this incident and said that God opened the heavens for and through the gate of heaven, God’s favour was poured out abundantly for him.
I have heard this passage taught in that it is possible for us to maintain this “open heaven” by “dreaming big”, being committed and tithing our one tenth to the Lord. While I value the grace of being committed, having visions and the grace of giving, I must say it actually teaches us of a God who would do everything for us.
So how do we maintain this “open heaven”? Does it depend on our human effort? John shared with this event. The key way to this “open heaven” is the “gate of heaven where angels ascend and descend.” How do we find it?
“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”
Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.”
Dear friends, Jesus revealed to Nathanael who Jacob saw. It was Jesus, the real gateway to heaven – The real reason for an open heaven. By Jesus finished work, he made it possible for God to constantly favour us. God made Jesus a curse for us so that we receive the blessing of Abraham. He blesses us not because we are good but Jesus was good.
Thought of the day
How would your day be like, if you knew there is “open heaven” for you 24/7?
