I have never seen it before. The first miracle is usually presumed to be that the Lord turned water into wine. Tonight as I have my communion with the Lord, the Spirit showed us it was not “normal” water, it was ceremonial cleansing water.
John tells us it was “six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing.” The water that is poured into such bottles is “naturally pure, unused, not contain other substances, and not be discoloured. The water also must be poured from a vessel as a human act, on the basis of references in the Bible to this practice, e.g. Elisha pouring water upon the hands of Elijah.”
While the act is done, a blessing is spoken – “Blessed are you, Hashem our G-d King of the universe Who has sanctified us with His commandments, And has commanded us concerning the elevation of hands.”
What happened next baffled everyone. The master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
The wine was saved for the best till now. The cleansing process is best saved until now. Friends, if you have been a bible student, you would recognize, wine is symbolic of the Holy Spirit (the new wine) and also the New Covenant. As Jesus performed his first public miracle, he announces there is a better of way to be cleanse. The best way. And Jesus is going to do it.
By his death on the cross, he would change the first miracle of Moses who turned water into blood, into cleansing water into the wine of joy. The Old Covenant was simple, when something wrong happens, just get rid of it. Someone sins, kill him or kill a lamb. The New Covenant is different, when things go wrong, Jesus brings life. Jesus becomes the lamb.
In that miracle Jesus introduced a new way of cleansing, not with ceremonial water under the Law, but with wine. Jesus through the Spirit produces his fruit in us, builds the abundant life in us, gives us grace everything we fumble. What joy we have. This was the true message of the wedding. It tells us that Jesus will be married to us and his spirit will flow through us like wine filling us with joy.
Jesus said before his death, this is wine of the New Covenant which is for the forgiveness of sins. He was referring to his blood. His blood has not just cleansed you. He took your sins once and for all.
Thought for the day
In Jesus God saved the best for you until now.
