Hebrews 1: It’s direct now!

Dear friends, I noticed that many teach Hebrews chapter 1 being Jesus is sovereign or that he is superior to the angels. I verily believe it is a merely a preamble to a more important message. Let us see how Hebrews 1 begin. “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.”

The key issue here is the message that God speaks through His Son and His Son is “the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” It is clear here the theme of chapter 1 is the message that is being spoken. It is after these points are established the writer brings in the supremacy of Jesus over the angels. “So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.”

In other words the message of Hebrews is that the word or the message that is spoken through His Son Jesus is greater than the prophets and the angels. Thus the writer’s emphasis of Jesus being greater than the angels is how he wishes to present that fact that the message given by God through Jesus is greater than that of the angels! “There is a message from the angels?” You say. Take a look at this. Hebrews 2:2-3 For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. Notice that?

What then is the message of the angels? The words “every violation and disobedience received its just punishment” gives us a clue. Now look at this.

Galatians 1:8-12 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse! 10 Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. 11 I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.”

Do you realize Paul just said the same things the writer of Hebrews did? There is a gospel that from the angels and a gospel not from human origin but through the Son. Let’s look at the message of the angels and what this message is. Galatians 3:19  Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator. See now Acts 7:53 you who have received the law that was given through angels but have not obeyed it.”

Dear friends, the message given by the Law were for the angels. So was the blood of bulls and goats. Note it was God who wanted the sacrifices? Hebrews 10: 5-6 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased.”

Do you know it was the Law which demanded it? Hebrews 10: 1 The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. This explains the cherubs on the curtain, the one separating the priests from entering the Holy of Holies.

This also explains why there are cherubs on the ark and that without blood there is no forgiveness of sins. If we look at Job, we are given a glimpse of what happens in heaven when it comes to our forgiveness in accordance to the Law.

Job 33:22-24 Yet if there is an angel at their side, a messenger, one out of a thousand, sent to tell them how to be upright, and he is gracious to that person and says to God, ‘Spare them from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom for them— This shows that one of a thousand who spares you but there must be a ransom, a sacrifice.

The good news here is that when Jesus died these things happen:

a)   The curtain was torn. The great news here is this, God replaced the torn veil with a new one. “Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way for us through the curtain that is, his body” Hebrews 10:19. That means the angels do not stand between you and God, Jesus does. However the best thing here is this, you my dear believer is in this body.

b)   The ministry of the angels came to an end. See Colossians 2:13-15 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.  disarmed the powers and authorities he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. Notice the angels at Jesus head and feet at his tomb were seated and swordless.

That simply meant that the angels were no longer administrator of the Law of Moses. That is also why Paul says in Colossians 2 the “worship of angels” had seized. “Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.” That is the ministry of the Old Covenant! That is why Hebrews 1 now describe them as “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”

That my dear friends, is also how “we who were made lower that the angels” now judge the angels because through Jesus “who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone”… we are made higher that the angels.

c)    There is no more need for forgiveness.

It is as imperative for us to know the ministry of the Law of Moses ended in the tomb of Jesus. Jesus’ ministry is different from that of the angels which required annual forgiveness. Jesus’ did not forgive your sins. He took away your sins. Your sins are not forgiven per se, they are taken away. Once and for all. Check this out: (sources Hebrews 9, 10 and Romans 7)

That my friend, is why the message spoken by Jesus, is far more superior to that of the angels. That is the message which could not be ignored. That is the message we cannot miss. That is why he said “how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.” O Dear friends, embrace the Master, kiss him, love him and fall at his feet. He uses not intermediary, he speaks to us directly. Hallelujah!
