Being blotted out from the book of life.

blot

Revelation 3:5

New International Version 1984 (NIV1984)

He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels.

I think you would generally would have figured out the warnings given by Jesus to the angels of the 7 churches in Revelation are actually given to the pastors to the church. The word “angel” in Greek “angelos” depicts the meaning of “messenger”.

I also think you would have also figured out that Jesus was speaking to the pastors of the church to tell them what needs to be done in order to protect the flock. In some cases, Jesus would remove the flock from the pastor or even from the city such as in Ephesus. In some cases Jesus comes personally to beat the deceiving wolves which were in the church such as Jezebel.

It is pertinent to note in all these warnings to the pastors, Jesus echoed the words, hear what the Spirit said or in some translation “saying”. Though the tense may not be clear, we know one thing. The Holy Spirit will be with the church forever. Jesus said it in John 14:16.

So the Spirit will keep speaking to keep the church safe even though it may be led by poor pastors.

Now here is the sticky issue of the 7 “you must overcome”. Herein lies the question, “how do we overcome?” “what are we to overcome?”

Rev 2:11  He that hathG2192 an ear,G3775 let him hearG191 whatG5101 theG3588 SpiritG4151saithG3004 unto theG3588 churches;G1577 He that overcomethG3528 shall notG3364 be hurtG91ofG1537 theG3588 secondG1208 death.G2288

Rev 3:5  He that overcometh,G3528 the sameG3778 shall be clothedG4016 inG1722 whiteG3022raiment;G2440 andG2532 I will notG3364 blot outG1813 hisG848 nameG3686 outG1537 of theG3588bookG976 of life,G2222 butG2532 I will confessG1843 hisG848 nameG3686 beforeG1799 myG3450Father,G3962 andG2532 beforeG1799 hisG848 angels.G32

Notice the word “overcome” in the Greek in Revelation 2 comes from the word “nikaō”. The Greek number G3528 is attached to it. It is the number the Greek Scholar Strong’s Concordance attached to it.

Some of you will have already guess it! Yes the root word for “NIKE!” The famous sports brand. It means victorious!

Now where do we find this word in the rest of the New Testament? See:

1Jn 5:4  ForG3754 whatsoeverG3956 is bornG1080 ofG1537 GodG2316 overcomethG3528 theG3588world:G2889 andG2532

thisG3778 isG2076 theG3588 victoryG3529 that overcomethG3528 theG3588world,G2889

even ourG2257 faith.G4102

Notice that the “overcometh” in 1 John and Revelation both carries the number G 3528?

Like many Christians today they keep wondering how do I overcome what was being written in the book of Revelation? John answers: By believing in Jesus. But note what John says it is not just by believing blindly but by believing Jesus has already overcome the world. See:

“1 John 5:4-6

for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

This is the one who came by water and blood —Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.”

Note here the writer John being the same writer in Revelation is giving us  a commentary about Revelation. Please note the book of Revelation was written before 1 John. See: There is not unanimous agreement as to when the epistle was written, but some scholars have it as shortly after the completion of the Book of Revelation (which some believe to be 96 A.D.), and have the epistle’s writership to be around 98 or 99 A.D. Source:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Epistle_of_John

I am sure like us the believers then, were wondering how do we become over-comers? John answers “We are already over-comers!”  However, I need us to think about something here. John thereafter encourages to believe something else. The finished work of Jesus.

This is the one who came by water and blood —Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.”

So John echoes the voice of the Spirit here. What is he (the Spirit) saying to churches? Jesus will be your over-comer. Believe in Jesus, he shall remove you from danger, he will fight against the teachers of Balaam, he will strike Jezebel’s children dead, and he will come in and dine with you.”

By the way did Jesus say he will blot you out of the book or did he say I will not blot you out of the book?

Revelation 3:5
The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels.”

Let’s look at this word “never”:

οὐ μή

ou mē

oo may

That is, G3756 and G3361; a double negative strengthening the denialnot at all: – any more, at all, by any (no) means, neither, never, no (at all), in no case (wise), nor ever, not (at all, in any wise).

It’s a double negative.

Let me now paraphrase Revelation 3:5

All who believe in Jesus’s finished and perfect work and who have been born of God will be clothed in white. I will never, by any (no) means, neither, never ever, no (at all), in no case (wise), nor ever, not (at all, in any wise)  erase their names from the Book of Life, but I will announce before my Father and his angels that they are mine.

Think about that! Let’s worship Jesus!

Simon I just read this and thought it was great! Can you explain what revelation 3:4 is about, when I read it it says that the ones who will be clothed and white are the ones who have not defiled their garments, This kind of sounds like a loss of salvation passage because it cant be talking a lost person because according to zacarriah our garments are already filthy So it must be talking about someone who’s garments were once washed and now are defiled. Please explain this if you can.

Simon I was hoping to here back from you and still have not, I’m still wondering about the church of Sardis and those who have defiled their garments how can someone defile what was already dirty unless it was clean?
