It is pertinent to note that Christians are divided in their understanding of whether the believer is bound by the 10 commandments or not. Also much of these arguments centre themselves with the understanding that God “has written his laws in our hearts”. One group I know says that Christians are the Ark of the Covenant and the laws are placed into us. I wonder how they feel when we tell them the word “ark” actually means “coffin”. So the Ark of the Covenant actually means coffin of the covenant. http://www.studylight.org/dic/hbd/view.cgi?number=T452
As gently as I can put it the Ark of the Covenant is not the believer. This is because what the 10 commandments in the ministry of death and condemnation. (see 2 Corinthians 3: 7and 9)
7 Now if the dispensation of death engraved in letters on stone [the ministration of the Law], was inaugurated with such glory and splendor that the Israelites were not able to look steadily at the face of Moses because of its brilliance, [a glory] that was to fade and pass away,
9 For if the service that condemns [the ministration of doom] had glory, how infinitely more abounding in splendor and glory must be the service that makes righteous [the ministry that produces and fosters righteous living and right standing with God]!
So where does God put these laws? Yup in a coffin.
Now let’s look at the ark.
Amplified Bible (AMP)
20 And the cherubim shall spread out their wings above, covering the mercy seat with their wings, facing each other and looking down toward the mercy seat.
See the 2 angels? And that they are seated at the right and left of a coffin. They are seated on the head and tail of a mercy seat.
Now take a look at this:
King James Version (KJV)
11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,
12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
Notice this… this is an exact description of the “coffin” of Jesus!
Our loving heavenly Father a such placed the ministry of death and condemnation into the coffin of Jesus.
New International Version (NIV)
12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you[a] alivewith Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Now see how this is translated here:
GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)
12 This happened when you were placed in the tomb with Christ through baptism. In baptism you were also brought back to life with Christ through faith in the power of God,[a] who brought him back to life.
13 You were once dead because of your failures and your uncircumcised corrupt nature. But God made you alive with Christ when he forgave all our failures. 14 He did this by erasing the charges that were brought against us by the written laws God had established. He took the charges away by nailing them to the cross. 15 He stripped the rulers and authorities of their power and made a public spectacle of them as he celebrated his victory in Christ.
See it? God nailed the 10 commandments on the cross of Jesus and buried in his tomb!
So we are not the ark. Jesus’s tomb is. Now then that’s done but we have not answered the question, how did God write His laws in our hearts? We now know it isn’t the 10 commandments then. Then what is it?
In the book of Hebrews, the writer writes:
16 “This is the covenant I will make with them
after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds.”[b]
17 Then he adds:
“Their sins and lawless acts
I will remember no more.”
Notice that when the Law of God is written in your hearts, your sins are remembered NO MORE?
You should be saying “hey the reason these laws are written in your heart, is so that you don’t sin! So that you will be convicted of your sins!!!!” So that you will remember not to sin. So that the Holy Spirit remind you that you are a sinner!”
Here’s a clue to what happen. See verse 5-10 of Hebrews 10.
5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:
“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but a body you prepared for me;
6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings
you were not pleased.
7 Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—
I have come to do your will, my God.’”[a]
8 First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law.
9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.”
He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Now look at Psalms 40.
6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—
but my ears you have opened[c]—
burnt offerings and sin offerings[d] you did not require.
7 Then I said, “Here I am, I have come—
it is written about me in the scroll.[e]
8 I desire to do your will, my God;
your law is within my heart.”
Now look at Psalm 40 in the Orthodox Jewish Bible
Orthodox Jewish Bible (OJB)
6 (7) Zevach and minchah Thou didst not desire; mine ears hast Thou pierced; olah (burnt offering) and chata’ah (sin offering) hast Thou not required.
7 (8) Then said I, Hinei, I come; in the megillat sefer it is written of me [cf MJ 10:5-7],
8 (9) I delight to do Thy will, O Elohai; yea, Thy torah is within my heart.
Important Note: Psalms 40 is not about us but JESUS!
The opening of the ears here does not mean willingness to listen. It is translated into the New Testament as “a body you prepared for me” and in the Jewish Bible as “piercing of the ears”.
How is this linked together?
Exodus on Slavery
“When you acquire a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years; in the seventh year he shall go free, without payment. If he came single, he shall leave single; if he had a wife, his wife shall leave with him. If his master gave him a wife, and she has borne him children, the wife and her children shall belong to the master, and he shall leave alone.
“But if the slave declares, ‘I love my master, and my wife and children: I do not wish to go free,’ his master shall take him before God. He shall be brought to the door or the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall then remain his slave for life.”
So a slave who has the liberty to become absolutely free after paying off his term of slavery and is legally and equitably freed decided to be a slave OUT OF LOVE, his ear is pierced. He is called a “love slave” or a “bond servant”. He becomes a slave forever because he loves his master.
When the writer of Hebrews interchanged this term with “a body you prepared for me”, he is saying Jesus will become a man forever. While he is fully God and thus was in the form of a spirit, Jesus now becomes a “love slave” and a “bond servant” to us choosing to remain in human form forever. This is because he is now our new high priest, our intercessor, our mediator, our righteousness, our new veil, the new access to the Father. So when the Father sees His Son, he sees the whole humanity through him. Could you just imagine, there is a man in heaven?
Yet we say God does not understand humans. His Son is seated at the right hand at the Father and he is human.
Look at Psalm 40: 8 I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart.”
8 (9) I delight to do Thy will, O Elohai; yea, Thy torah is within my heart.
Whose heart is this? Jesus!
You see when the Father says “I will write my laws in their heart”, he is not saying he will inscribe the 10 commandments into your heart. He is saying He is replacing your heart of stone, with the heart of the person described in Psalm 40. Jesus. God is replacing your heart with the heart of Jesus. God is replacing your Adamic nature with the nature of His Son.
God is writing the finished work of Jesus into your heart. You see Jesus today lives among his people although he has a human body in heaven. That body is the way you have access to God now. Yet his Spirit is in all believers, and Paul tells us we are the temple of his Spirit and that we are now the Body of Jesus. Guess whose heart we have now?
Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
Look at how Paul describes the believer, he is God’s letter. The new heart of flesh is the writings Spirit of the living God.
And he writes
King James Version (KJV)
15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,
16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.”
So when God says “he is writing his laws into your heart”, what He is actually saying is that the Holy Spirit is creating the heart of Jesus in your bodies. You see the more he does that the more you will realize that the heart of Jesus cries out to you, “I have kept the law of God in my heart. As such your sins and iniquities will I remember no more.”
God did not take the laws which were written on stone and then replaced it in your heart. He took your heart (evil, hard and which is filled with darkness) and replaced it with the heart of His Son, through the Holy Spirit.
Now you can really say, “you have loved Him with all your heart”. His Son did and now you have his heart.
This how Eugene Peterson puts it:
The Message (MSG)
7-8 So I answered, “I’m coming.
I read in your letter what you wrote about me,
And I’m coming to the party
you’re throwing for me.”
That’s when God’s Word entered my life,
became part of my very being.”
Jesus is now part of my being, thru the letter of the Holy Spirit. The eternal Word (Jesus) is now part of my very being. His heart beats in mine.
