Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
Often we equate the above verse as working for our salvation by fearing we can’t make because we must just fail in our service to him. We read verse 12 thinking that this constitute the process in which we have to do our part in order for God can sanctify us. Sadly, many believers missed out on verse 13. Notice there are 2 “work” there?
The first one is about us working out. The other God working in. The Greek for this word is very different. The first implies ‘a final touch’. The second, “channeled a lot of energy” into something. So when you read the 2 verses together you will see that it is God who did everything for you to apply the final touch.
Do not be discouraged by the words ‘fear and trembling’. It is saying. Paul see it when he said:
1 Corinthians 2:3-4
3 I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power…
What Paul meant therefore by fear and trembling is the demonstration of the Spirit’s power.
This morning The Lord asked me a question, “my son, for whose pleasure did I channeled my energy?” I said “Lord, it is yours.” Like a flash, I saw it God did it because it pleased Him. So after we look at verse 12 as a verse that says if we are not working enough, we will not earn our salvation or that if we do not maintain it we will lose it.
Look at verse 13. Dear friends it says it is for His pleasure. That means it gives him great pleasure to channel all His energies into you. Working in to do, to will. With pleasure. Yes, you give him pleasure.
Look at these verses.
“God has planted [his people] like strong and graceful oaks for His own glory.” –Isaiah 61:3 [LB]
“You, god, created everything, and it is for your pleasure that they exist and were created.” –Revelation 4:11 [NLT]
“The Lord takes pleasure in His people.” –Psalm 149:4 [TEV]
“Because of His love, God had already decided that through Jesus Christ, He would make His children–this was His pleasure and purpose.” –Ephesians 1:5 [TEV]
“Praise be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you.” –1 Kings 10:9 [NIV]
Therefore brothers and sisters, what would cause God to stop working in our life? Your failures? Your unkept promises? Your sins? Your filth? You?
No! It has nothing to do with what I just showed you. He is doing for HIS pleasure. All that we mentioned is about us. Paul tells us it is about Him.
So don’t be afraid. God loves to channel all His energy into you. Why? Because It makes Him happy. We too should be too.
“The joy of The Lord” is our strength.
Thought for the day.
When God made Adam and Eve, did He say that “it was good” or “it was very good?”
