Are we to die at 70 years old?

“Life is fragile”, “Life is like vapor”, “Here today, Gone tomorrow”.

There are many who would tell you that we live until 70. A typical sermon would sound something like this:

Psalm 90

Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death—
they are like the new grass of the morning:
In the morning it springs up new,
but by evening it is dry and withered.”

10 Our days may come to seventy years,
or eighty, if our strength endures;
yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow,
for they quickly pass, and we fly away.

Also there was a mention of Genesis 5 and that the word “died” was mentioned 8 times.

This is the written account of Adam’s family line.

When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God. He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind”[a] when they were created.

When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters.Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.

When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father[b] of Enosh. After he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.

When Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan. 10 After he became the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Altogether, Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died.

12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel. 13 After he became the father of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Altogether, Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died.

15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared. 16 After he became the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Altogether, Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died.

18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch. 19 After he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Altogether, Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died.

21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. 22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters.23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 24 Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. 26 After he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Altogether, Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.

28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. 29 He named him Noah[c] and said, “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed.”30 After Noah was born, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31 Altogether, Lamech lived a total of 777 years, and then he died.

32 After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham and Japheth.

Dear friends, there are also those who say we will not lived more than 120. They use this verse:

Genesis 6:3

Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with[a] humans forever, for they are mortal[b]; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

God says, “my people suffer from a lack of knowledge”.

Let us see what the Bible really teaches.

No. 1 where did we get the idea that life is like a breath of air?

In Genesis, Adam has 2 sons. These sons were a result of a promise made by God that one day a woman would conceive the savior of the world. Adam thought Cain is this savior. Cain means “acquired”. For Adam had acquired a savior. So he thought Abel was a matter of insignificance and called him “Habel” which means “ a breath of air”, useless man. God had however favor on Abel for he offered a sacrifice of blood wherein Cain offered his fruits from his toil, a symbol of works righteousness. So Cain killed Abel. But does that mean Abel died young like his name. No! The Scriptures states that his blood cried out from the ground for justice. He is very much alive just apart from his body.

No. 2 Psalm 90 and 70 years old is not for the covenanted believer.

Take a look at Psalm 90. Look at the title!

“A prayer of Moses the man of God.”

It is a prayer made by a person under the Old Covenant, under the covenant of law. Also it speaks to those under the wrath of God.

See:

“7 We are consumed by your anger
and terrified by your indignation.
You have set our iniquities before you,
our secret sins in the light of your presence.
All our days pass away under your wrath
;
we finish our years with a moan.
10 Our days may come to seventy years,
or eighty, if our strength endures;”

Notice this does not describe the believer. This describes the unbeliever. It refers to a generation of people who were wandering in the wilderness. See what Moses prayed thereafter:

14 Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,
that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.”

See you can change the situation.

So Psalms 90 is not for the believer. It does not describe the lifespan of a person under grace but under wrath.

We are people under peace with God not under the wrath with God. See Romans 5:1. We ALREADY HAVE PEACE with God. So we live above 70 years old.

No. 3.  So 120 the cap then?

My answer is no. This verse:

[“Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with[a] humans forever, for they are mortal[b]; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”]

Does not mean that we die at 120 BUT that this is the span of time God announce to the earth the time he would spare the world before the flood would come and destroy everyone except Noah’s household. Don’t believe me?

Check this out:

“Genesis 11

10 This is the account of Shem’s family line.

Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father[d] of Arphaxad. 11 And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters.

12 When Arphaxad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah. 13 And after he became the father of Shelah, Arphaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.[e]

14 When Shelah had lived 30 years, he became the father of Eber. 15 And after he became the father of Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.

16 When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg. 17 And after he became the father of Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters.”

Notice there is no mention of death?

Also many years later…

32 Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Harran.

So when we will die. In the Old Covenant the right Psalm is not Psalm 90 but Psalm 91.

14 “Because he[b] loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.”

Life is LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG with Jesus.

No. 4. What about Genesis 5 then?

Friends Genesis 5 and placed after Genesis 4 to show you these people how long they lived, Genesis 4 shows you a line that has no life at all. Now reread Genesis 5:

22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters.23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years24 Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

It’s an emphasis of how LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG they lived! See now Genesis 4 and look how similar the names are to those in Genesis 5.

So when do we die? Do we have power over death? I believe so; Paul could decide when he dies.  He said “for me to live is Christ, to die is gain” and yet he told the church that he chose to remain for their sakes. Then finally after he said “I have run the good race. I have fought the good fight of faith”, he went home in glory. The bible tells us in James, the power of life and death lies in the tongue. What do you profess with it? When a problem comes, what comes out from you mout? “Sure die”? or “sure no problem one!”?

If we tell people they will die at 70 then they will sure die before that. If I believe that “with long life God will satisfy me”, I will live long and have power over death. That is why Jesus died young, so that we can have a long and satisfying life. I believe God will not lie me die. I will see the rapture and be taken to glory!

One last note, we must also correct an important notion, Christians don’t die when their body give way. They died on the cross when Jesus died. So when the bodies die, they truly live, their spirit are no longer repressed by a decaying body. They truly feel more alive than ever. So Christians do not die. They sleep. I could have sworn I had vision of my friend who is now asleep in his full glowing glory. He was smiling at me. I could have sworn he was showing me his brand new watch and said time doesn’t move there at all.

My friend Frank, this is for you. You are in glory, I am not. I miss you but I am just glad you are buying angels lobsters now.
