70 myths on losing salvation (4): Doctrine of Demons.

Myth No. 4: Some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 1 Tim 4:1

Recently I found an interesting blog which states that we can lose our salvation in 70 ways. For the complete list of the 70 “ways”, kindly refer to:https://hischarisisenough.wordpress.com/2012/06/06/70-ways-of-losing-your-salvation-1-stop-believing-luke-813/

For myth No. 3, 20 and 50 please refer to: https://hischarisisenough.wordpress.com/2012/06/09/70-myths-about-losing-salvation-myth-3-and-20-you-can-lose-your-salvation-if-you-shrink-back-and-when-you-sin-willfully-3/

I must state my caveats 1st. The intention of this series of blog is NOT to refute BUT to explain in context what the verses which were use to support the writer’s contentions. This series of blogs are also not to demean NOR to prove him wrong. It is not even addressed to him but to many who share his views and as such are in a position of uncertainty. The point of this series of blogs is to give you an alternative view of what these verses mean and that you when reading this will be sure of the finished work of Christ.

And so that being out of the way, let us hope, words which may amount to slander and accusations may not be used against the writer or against me. To use words such as “heresy”, “satanic” or “false prophet” is childish and not Christ minded. If you can call me that, I can also address the same. I am not interested in that. I am interested in all of us finding the truth.

We will deal with 4th  “way of losing our salvation”. The writer states we can lose our salvation by “turning to doctrine of demons”

What are “teachings” taught by demons? I bet you  the first thing that come across your mind would be things concerning sin! Or anything “sinful”. Be prepared to be surprised.

Let’s look at the context. 1 Tim 4 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.”

Interesting? The teaching of these demons is do not marry and do not eat certain foods. Why? See the next verses “For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.”

Remember what happen to Peter in Acts 10? He was ask to eat unclean food. See Acts 10.

Peter’s Vision

About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. 10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. 11 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. 12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds. 13 Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”

14 “Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”

15 The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”

16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.

What was the purpose of that revelation to Peter by Jesus? It was for the purpose of announcing that the law has come to an end. Before this Peter thought he was still under the Law of Moses and refused to enter Cornelius’s house.

You can follow the explanation here: https://hischarisisenough.wordpress.com/2011/08/03/are-christians-bound-to-keep-the-commandments-why-nobody-preaches-from-acts-15r/

Hence the teaching of demons has something to do with the Law. While Jesus tells Peter to eat “unclean food” as the Law was abolished by Jesus’ death, [See Ephesians 2:15 “He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups”] the demons taught you must not eat certain food.

As such, it is oblivious that the teaching of demons had something to do with the Law of Moses. Paul then goes on and explains it to be “Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales;”.

What actually is the teaching of demons? Notice

a)  They forbid (marrying and eating) instead of giving license!

b)  It has to do with the Law.

Let me refer to 1 Tim 1 where Paul sets the preamble to 1 Timothy.

“Chapter 1

As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.

We know that the law is good if one uses it properlyWe also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.”

What Paul is saying is this. There were people who wanted to be teachers of the Law of Moses like Paul. The problem is that they do not know how to rightly divide the Word and/or knew the purpose of the Law.

Paul says the Law is NOT for the righteous but for people who break the Law. This is because the Christians has a righteousness that has nothing to do with the Law. See Romans 3: 20-23

20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in[a] Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile”

Note the footnote: Romans 3:22 Or through the faithfulness of

This righteousness is based on the faithfulness of Jesus and not ours. Hence Paul is saying these people (who are teaching the doctrine of demons) are using the Law of Moses against Christians rather than the unsaved.

The incredible truth is this if you have believed in Jesus, you are already righteous. See 2 Cor 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin[b] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

See also Colossians 1: 21 This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. 22 Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.

As such you are the “righteous” in verse 9 and not the “sinners” in verses 10 and 11. These so call “wannabe teachers of the law” were applying the Law to the righteous. That is wrong and is the very teaching of the demons. Note Satan is the accuser of the Christians and the power of sin is the Law. (1 Cor 15:56). The only way he can accuse the believer is to bring the Law back to the believer.

These demons were trying to bringing the Law of Moses back into the church. The words “later times” does not mean the 21st century but the last days of Judaism. The early Jewish Christians was being deceived into forsaking Jesus to go back to the Law for righteousness. Paul says a person falls from Grace when he reverts back to the Law in order to be righteous rather than by faith.

Galatians 5

You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from graceFor through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope. …..

You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you.”

Notice when you try to be justified by the law, you fall from grace and you stop running the good race! So, when you teach someone you can lose your salvation and you have to keep obedience to be saved, you are trying to be justified by the law.

Such teaching forbids Christians from enjoying the liberty that Christ has set you free.

Is this the doctrine of demons? You see any doctrine that applies the Law of Moses to a believer, a person who is righteous by faith already is a demonic teaching. It is the Gospel of Satan. Please also see: https://hischarisisenough.wordpress.com/2012/05/29/the-gospel-of-satan/

I am not the only person of holding this view. A W Pink states “In contradistinction to the Gospel of Christ, the gospel of Satan teaches salvation by works. It inculcates justification before God on the ground of human merits. Its sacramental phrase is “Be good and do good”; but it fails to recognize that in the flesh there dwelleth no good thing. It announces salvation by character, which reverses the order of God’s Word—character by, as the fruit of, salvation. Its various ramifications and organizations are manifold.”

Dear friends, so long as we know Jesus and Jesus alone, saves, we cannot lose our salvation. This is because we have a righteousness that is not base on my faithfulness but base on Jesus’s faithfulness.

Be at rest. Rest in His finished work!

  1. i gotta understand this.

what happens when a genuine believer goes back to the Law for justification?
is it even possible for a genuine believer to go back to the Law for jusification?

  2. Hi

Enjoyed your teaching on things taught by demons. I think you comments about the teaching of demons is getting people back under law sounds interesting. The best interpretation I have heard so far.

    Interesting site

Regarding losing your salvation. If we are born again then we have the nature of God in us. We also have a nature that cannot sin “That which is begotton of God cannot sin”
The old nature is condemed and removed from before God for ever by the work of the cross. The old nature has gone before God, the new nature cannot sin so if we can be lost what is lost? If His grace saved us its His grace that will keep us otherwise we are back to works.
