The perfect cleansing of our conscience: Hebrews 9 and 10

The Key Verse
(Why we cannot fully worship God and
Christ is not made manifest in you)

By these regulations the Holy Spirit revealed that the entrance to the Most Holy Place was not freely open as long as the Tabernacle and the system it represented were still in use.

2 Cor 2:14 But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. 15 Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. 16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

The Problem

The gifts and sacrifices that the priests offer are not able to cleanse the consciences of the people who bring them.

Blood
Bulls and Goats Christ

B & G: Divided between Holy Place and Most Holy Place
C: More perfect Tabernacle in heaven

B & G: His own sins The sins the people had committed in ignorance
C: Sins of His people once for all

B & G: Year after year
C: Sat down Once for all

B & G: Cleanse people’s bodies
C: Purify our consciences

B & G: Reminder of sins every year
C: Holy Spirit remembers OUR SINS No more

B & G: Guilt conscience
C: Perfect Conscience

B & G: Tied to the Law
C: Freed from the Law

B & G: Can never enter the Holy of Holies because it too was Sprinkled with the blood that sprinkled on the Law
C: We can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus

For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.

What is keeping on sinning or sin willfully in Hebrews 10:26?

Heb 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

Heb 10:29 How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?

Heb 3:12 See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

What does John 16 really teaches?

8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.
9 The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. 10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. 11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.

Spurgeon on Grace giving you license to sin?

No doctrine is so calculated to preserve a man from sin as the doctrine of the grace of God. Those who have called it “a licentious doctrine” did not know anything at all about it. …. There is nothing like a belief in my eternal perseverance, and the immutability of my Father’s affection, which can keep me near to Him from a motive of simple gratitude. Nothing makes a man so virtuous as belief of the truth. A lying doctrine will soon beget a lying practice.

A man cannot have an erroneous belief without by-and-by having an erroneous life. I believe the one thing naturally begets the other.

Why Joseph Wept.
15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?”

‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.’ Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father.” When their message came to him, Joseph wept.

18 His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. “We are your slaves,” they said.

21 So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.” And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.

Jesus weeps today because we still think we have yet to be fully forgiven
Luke 14: 41As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it
42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.

What is the result of a clean conscience?

Hold tightly without wavering to the hope
for God can be trusted to keep his promise
Motivate one another to acts of love and good work
Neglect not our meeting together, as some people do
Encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near
