Myth 58 & 59: Causing the wrath of God to be revealed in your life.

Image

I have dealt with the issues of myth 56 and 57 in my writings on Hebrews 12 so i will not deal with them again. Here are myths 58 and 59.

Myth 58: become vain in your imaginations, and your foolish heart can become so dark you’ll profess to be wise while being a fool. Rom 1:18-32

Myth 59. be turned over to your own lust because of not receiving God’s chastening, and you can become a sodomite, even while knowing that those who do such things are worthy of death. You can take pleasure in those who do such evils. Rom 1:18-32

Let me reproduce the whole passage to you and I want you to see that the profane acts of the human race stated in Romans 1:18-32 is a result of the wrath of God.

Romans 1

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine naturehave been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Right. The acts described in Romans 1 are a result of God giving them over to the desire of the hearts of the men Paul speaks about in Chapter 1. They are pagans. Paul deals with the Jews in Chapter 2.

Here lies the question: Why did God gave them over?

Answer: He was angry. See “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven”.

Why is he angry?

Answer:  a) they suppress the truth; b) they exchange the truth for a lie; c) they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of the truth and d) they know God’s righteous decree but did not obey it.

See it?

So these acts of sin are a symptom and the cause is that God is upset and angry because His truth is being exchanged for a lie.

The question here is this “What is the truth?”

In the past I thought it was God’s Holy nature and that he wants to obey the 10 commandments. We have been taught that is the truth that we have exchanged the lie with.

Dear friends, let me quote Romans 1: 17-18 again from the NIV.

17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last,[e] just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”[f]

God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.”

See it. Paul calls it God’s “invisible qualities”. Don’t see it? The problem here is the margin notes that divides verses 17 and 18.

Here is it again.

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last,[e] just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”[f]

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

Dear friends, do you see it?

What is this “truth” that is plain and obvious? What is this “truth” that is an expression of God’s invisible qualities that shows his eternal power and divine nature? What is this “truth” that these people have replaced with a lie that has incurred God’s wrath?

Here it is.

“The righteousness live by FAITH” and the righteousness that God gives is from “FAITH to FAITH”!

What did these people do? They exchanged God’s truth for a lie. That lie is the righteous lives by works!

Still not convinced?

See Romans 5. How did we get peace with God?

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we[b] boast in the hope of the glory of God.

Faith, faith and grace!

So how do we incur God’s wrath? No Faith, No Faith, No Grace. Hence when we exchange the truth that the Just walk by Faith into the Just walk by Works, the wrath of God is revealed!

Have you ever wondered why when you chose to please God by merit, you seem to fall into the same sin over and over again? Answer you believe that you have walk by works and NOT FAITH. When you chose to believe that you are righteous by obeying the Law you fall from grace. You fall because of your human effort. You live that lie. When you do that, God gives you up to the sinful desires of the heart.

So the theme of Romans is this. There is a righteousness that is apart from the law and which is a gift. Romans 3:20-21. That gift is Jesus.

Peace.

  1. I have been accepting this Truth for almost a year. My depression and anxiety I’ve had for 40+ years is largely gone. These explanations of various difficult verses (ones that can seem to espouse a works Gospel) are the most satisfying ones I’ve ever read. My life is changing.
